Alphabet Exhibit

As seen at Nice Produce. The Monster children Gallery in Sydney, Australia recently opened this exhibit of artists works. I recognize a few of them from the 11 Spring Street Grand Closing in NYC a few years ago. Andy Jenkins and Anthony Lister are two artists whose work I’ve seen before, both in person and online. When I photographed the 11 Spring Street Closing, I remember talking with Maya Hayuk and a number of other artists about the incredible pastiche created inside the historical horse stable in NoLIta.

I really love the simplicity and elegence of a project like this. You give each artist a letter of the alphabet and go! This piece is great example of an obstruction methodology like the one employed by Lars Von Trier in his film The Five Obstructions. I think it’s about time we start doing things like this in our program at Penn State. I see a number of the painting students doing this amongst each other but I think we need to open it up to a broader creative collective. There’s something very freeing about having to work around an obstruction system. You leave all of the hang ups you might normally have when trying to come up with an idea for a project or a piece because you have your first impulse given to you in the form of an obstruction.
